Access to HE

Access to HE entry requirements

Most Access to HE Diplomas require GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above (or equivalent), plus a satisfactory written application. Some pathways such as Nursing or Midwifery may require GCSE Science. There are no upper age limits and you do not need any prior A-Levels or post-16 qualifications.

Standard entry requirements

  • GCSE English Language at grade 4/C or above (or Functional Skills Level 2)
  • GCSE Maths at grade 4/C or above (or Functional Skills Level 2)
  • Aged 19 or over at the start of the course
  • Right to study in the UK

Pathway-specific requirements

Some pathways have additional requirements driven by the universities they feed into. For example, Access to HE Nursing pathways often require GCSE Science (Biology, Combined Science, or equivalent at Level 2) because nursing degrees require it for UCAS entry.

What if I don’t have GCSEs?

You can complete Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths alongside your Access to HE Diploma. These are accepted as GCSE equivalents by every UK university. Many learners enrol on both at the same time.

You are likely a good fit if…

  • You are 19 or over and committed to studying for a higher education place
  • You can dedicate 15–20 hours per week to study
  • You have GCSE Maths and English at grade 4 / C or are willing to study them alongside
  • You have a clear career goal — nursing, social work, teaching, biomedical science
  • You are confident reading and writing in English at Level 2 / GCSE standard
  • You have reliable internet and a laptop or desktop computer

You may need a different route if…

  • You are 16–18 and still in full-time school education
  • You want a quick certificate rather than a university progression diploma
  • You cannot commit to coursework deadlines across 9–12 months
  • You need a face-to-face classroom environment to learn effectively
  • Your end goal is a vocational job that does not require a degree
FAQ

Your questions answered

Do I need any qualifications to start?

No formal qualifications are required to enrol on an Access to HE Diploma at Lift College. Instead you complete a short suitability conversation with one of our advisers — typically 15 minutes — to confirm the course matches your goals and that you can manage the academic workload. Bringing existing qualifications such as GCSEs or a Level 2 certificate strengthens your application but is not a prerequisite.

I do not have GCSE English or Maths — can I still progress to university?

You can still enrol on the Access to HE Diploma without GCSEs. However, almost every UK university requires GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above for entry, and nursing, midwifery, social work, and teacher training all mandate them. We recommend studying GCSE Maths and English alongside your Access course or completing them first if you have time. Lift College offers both online with the same flexible structure.

Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit. Access to HE was designed for adults returning to education, and our learners range from 19 to 65+. The youngest standard entry is 19 by the start date of the course, although in some cases applicants aged 18 may be accepted following a suitability review. Universities welcome mature applicants and many medical and nursing programmes specifically target experienced career-changers.

Do I need a DBS check?

You do not need a DBS check to enrol on the Access to HE Diploma itself. However, certain destination courses — nursing, midwifery, social work, teaching, paramedic science — require an enhanced DBS check before you start university. We advise getting this in motion in the final months of your Access course so it is ready for your university start date.

What equipment and software do I need?

You need a laptop or desktop computer with reliable internet access, Microsoft Word or equivalent for assignments, and a webcam plus microphone for tutor calls. All learning materials, the virtual learning environment, and academic resources are provided by Lift College at no extra cost. Tablets and mobile-only setups are not recommended because writing 1,500–3,000-word assignments is impractical on small screens.

Can international applicants enrol?

Yes, applicants based outside the UK can enrol provided they hold IELTS Level 6.0 or equivalent English proficiency. However, the Access to HE Diploma is a UK qualification optimised for UK university progression. International applicants planning to study in their home country should check that their target universities accept the qualification before enrolling.
