Management & Leadership
Management & Leadership qualifications
Management and leadership qualifications are Ofqual-regulated awards, certificates, and diplomas offered by CMI (Chartered Management Institute) and ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) at Levels 3 to 7 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework. They are entirely assignment-based, designed for study alongside a full-time management role, and cover the skills needed to progress from first-line supervisor to director.

Awarding bodies in Management & Leadership
Management & Leadership qualifications — frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a CMI and an ILM management qualification?
CMI (Chartered Management Institute) and ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) are both Ofqual-regulated awarding bodies offering management qualifications at the same RQF levels. The key CMI differentiator is the Chartered Manager (CMgr) designation — only CMI qualifications are on the pathway to chartered status. ILM qualifications, part of the City & Guilds Group, carry strong brand recognition particularly in public sector, NHS, and local government roles. Both are widely accepted by UK employers.
Can I do a CMI Level 5 diploma online without previous management experience?
Most providers accept relevant professional experience in lieu of formal management experience at Level 5, though you typically need to be in, or moving into, a supervisory or management role during the course to generate portfolio evidence. If you are a team leader or senior professional with people management responsibilities, that usually satisfies the entry requirements. A Lift College adviser can confirm whether your current role qualifies before you enrol.
Is a CMI or ILM qualification recognised by employers in the UK?
Yes. CMI and ILM are the two most recognised management awarding bodies in the UK. CMI has over 157,000 members and is the only body in the UK and Ireland with a royal charter for management and leadership. ILM is part of City & Guilds Group, one of the world's largest awarding bodies. Both are listed on the Ofqual regulated qualifications register and are well understood by employers across all sectors.
What is the difference between CMI Level 3, Level 5, and Level 7?
Level 3 is for aspiring or new managers — first-line managers, team leaders, and supervisors. Level 5 is for practising middle managers and operations managers who need to develop strategic and operational leadership skills. Level 7 is the senior leadership qualification, broadly equivalent to a postgraduate degree and aimed at directors, executives, and those pursuing Chartered Manager status at the most senior level.
Are management diplomas entirely assignment-based, or are there exams?
CMI and ILM qualifications at all levels are entirely assignment-based — there are no timed written examinations. Assessment is through written management reports, reflective accounts, and work-based projects submitted to your assessor or tutor. This format suits working managers who study alongside a full-time role, as it lets you apply learning directly to your workplace rather than preparing for an exam.
How long does an online CMI Level 5 diploma take to complete?
Most learners complete a CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership in 12–18 months studying part-time alongside work. A certificate (shorter) typically takes 6–9 months. The exact duration depends on how many units are included, your pace of assignment submission, and the feedback turnaround from your tutor. Motivated learners in management roles who study consistently complete in 12 months.
