Inside every blood test, every cancer biopsy, every genetic screen is a scientist who made the result possible. Biomedical science is the discipline that turns biological samples into clinical answers, and it is one of the most technically demanding and intellectually rewarding careers in the NHS. The Access to HE Diploma (Science), Biomedical Pathway is your route to that career.
This Level 3 qualification is awarded by OCN London, a QAA-recognised Access Validating Agency. It is for adults aged 19 and over who want to study Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or Genetics at a UK university but do not hold the science A levels normally expected.
The Biomedical Pathway has a tighter, more molecular focus than the broader Medical and Health Sciences Pathway. You will study cell and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, laboratory science principles, immunology, and the science of diagnostic testing. Every unit is designed around what first-year biomedical science students need to know.
Studied 100% online over 12 months, with no exams. Assessment is entirely through essays, scientific reports, data analysis, and a final independent research project. You earn up to 144 UCAS points based on your grade profile. Your tutor provides written feedback within 2 working days on every piece of work.
HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientists work in NHS pathology departments across haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, histopathology, and genetics. The profession is consistently in workforce demand across NHS trusts.
The pathway also opens doors to pharmaceutical research, clinical trials, diagnostics companies, and academic science. A Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) is the foundation for a wide range of laboratory and research careers beyond the NHS.
