What is the Chartered Management Institute?

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) was founded in 1947 and is the only chartered professional body in the UK dedicated entirely to management and leadership. It has over 180,000 members and awards qualifications through a network of Ofqual-regulated approved centres across the UK and internationally.

CMI qualifications are widely recognised by employers in both the public and private sectors. The institute's reputation is built on the quality of its qualifications and on its exclusive ability to confer Chartered Manager (CMgr) status — the professional designation that sits above all other management credentials in the UK.

The CMI qualification levels

CMI qualifications are structured across five main levels, each corresponding to a career stage:

  • CMI Level 3 — for team leaders and first-line managers entering a supervisory role for the first time
  • CMI Level 4 — for junior managers developing broader operational skills
  • CMI Level 5 — for middle managers with responsibility for teams, resources, and operational planning
  • CMI Level 6 — for senior operational managers bridging middle management and strategic leadership
  • CMI Level 7 — for senior leaders, directors, and those responsible for strategy and organisational direction

At each level, qualifications are available as an Award (smallest), Certificate (medium), or Diploma (largest). The choice depends on the learner's time availability and the depth of study required. All are regulated by Ofqual and appear on the RQF.

CMI Level 3: first steps into management

CMI Level 3 qualifications in Management and Leadership are designed for those who are newly responsible for managing a team or project for the first time. Units typically cover managing individuals' performance, planning workloads, communicating effectively, and building team cohesion.

A CMI Level 3 Award requires approximately 65.00 guided learning hours and can be completed in three to six months alongside full-time work. It is a practical, assignment-based qualification — there are no formal examinations. All assessment is submitted in writing to the provider for marking.

CMI Level 5: middle management

CMI Level 5 is the most widely studied management qualification in the UK outside of MBAs. It is aimed at managers who are responsible for departments, budgets, and project delivery. Units at this level address change management, strategic communication, resource planning, and developing high-performing teams.

The CMI Level 5 Diploma represents a comprehensive qualification equivalent in level to a foundation degree or HND. It requires approximately 370.00 guided learning hours. The Certificate is a lighter option at around 130.00 guided learning hours.

CMI Level 7: strategic leadership

CMI Level 7 qualifications in Strategic Management and Leadership are postgraduate-level professional qualifications for senior managers and executives. They address strategic direction, organisational culture, senior stakeholder management, and leading large-scale change.

Completing a CMI Level 7 Diploma or Extended Diploma opens the most direct pathway to Chartered Manager status via the CMI's qualification route. According to CMI, there are over 12,000 Chartered Managers in the UK, and Chartered Manager status is recognised by employers in over 40 countries.

How CMI qualifications are assessed

All CMI qualifications are assessed through written assignments submitted to the learner's approved centre. There are no formal sit-down examinations. Assignments draw on the learner's real-world professional practice, which is one reason CMI qualifications are well regarded by employers — they require learners to demonstrate the application of theory, not just recall of it.

Do I need a degree to study CMI Level 7?
No formal degree is required, but CMI Level 7 providers typically expect applicants to have significant relevant management experience. Each approved centre sets its own entry criteria, so check with your provider.
How long does a CMI Level 5 qualification take?
A CMI Level 5 Certificate takes approximately 130.00 guided learning hours, typically six to twelve months alongside work. The full Level 5 Diploma requires approximately 370.00 guided learning hours and may take twelve to twenty-four months.
